Our newest hire at SPC is Christine Gesell, who will be joining us upon her graduation this Spring. She spared some time to answer our questions about beginning this next chapter with SPC.
SPC: Tell us a little about yourself.
CG: I am a senior graduating from Illinois State University with a BS in Graphic Communication and a minor in Business Administration. I grew up in Manteno, Illinois, which is a very small town near Kankakee, Illinois. After high school, I decided to attend ISU, where my parents actually met while students! They were thrilled when I decided to attend their alma mater. I’ve been very active in college by volunteering and joining several organizations on campus. I am excited to start a new journey by moving to Chicago and becoming a part of the SPC family.
What drew you to a career in print?
While I was in high school, I was the first one to take charge of the printed and presentation parts of every group project. I started exploring career opportunities and looking into a major in marketing or graphic design, but realized that the fine art and drawing aspect of it was not my strength. Then I stumbled upon Graphic Communications, which was the perfect mix of everything I wanted. I absolutely love creating a printed piece and all the work that goes into it—the hidden process to get that project to your front door.
What are some of the most important things you learned at the print program at ISU?
I have learned so many valuable things at Illinois State University. One of the biggest things is the importance of organization and file management. Being on the competition team has taught me how to properly handle fire drills that this industry faces on an everyday basis. I also learned to not be afraid to get your hands dirty and to ask for help.
Why did you choose SPC as the place to start your career?
I felt very comfortable at meetings I had with the SPC executive members. This is a brand-new experience for me, and after talking with everyone, I believe I have a great support system to guide me on the correct path here at SPC.
What is one thing your new co-workers probably wouldn’t guess about you?
I was in dance classes and show choir until graduation from high school. So, if anyone wants to challenge me in karaoke, bring it on!
